Freddie Gage is a Southern Baptist preacher who seems mostly known for the cover of his album All My Friends are Dead. I have yet to see that LP in the real world. However, I did find this "gem". Back then, Freddie tried to sound hip to attract people to his way of thinking about the world. As the back cover says, Freddie is a "turned-on" preacher who is "out of sight" and "on the in to what's happening."

The reason Freddie tried to act like he was cool was because he focused on America's youth. From looking at the back cover again, apparently the public schools didn't have any problem letting Freddie (and probably others of the same ilk) come and preach at school assemblies (i.e. indoctrinate a captive audience of teenagers). The sermon on this album was recorded during a school assembly consisting of an audience of over 3,000 high school students (according to the album cover) in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Freddie preaches against the evils of LSD, pot, other drugs, and hippies, tells a few jokes that are surprising funny, and tells a few anecdotes about kids whose drug experiences end up in tragedy. Freddie is in hysteria mode most of the time as Freddie emphasizes that America's youth is in danger of becoming a bunch of junkies and by implication a bunch of smelly rebellious hippies. While not being explicit, Freddie's take-home point is that the youth of America can find peace and be upstanding citizens by not doing drugs and having the same beliefs as the "turned-on" Freddie. Like out of sight, man.

Can anyone tell me the name of the tune that the school band plays at the beginning? It's familiar, but I can't remember the title and who originally performed it.

Brian Ruud - From a Bum Trip to... "The Trip Beyond"

Brian Ruud is a preacher from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada who grew up as a son of a preacher. Brian Ruud had a rebellious streak. On this LP loaded with references to drug experiences, Brian tells his story of where he came from and how he came to be the person he is today. He was basically a juvenille delinquent during most of his childhood and teenage years who was involved in robbery, violence, drug dealing and, of course, drug use. His father also had a penchant for corporal punishment. Brian was on what is called a "bum trip." He lost a lost of weight from drug abuse and felt a lot of self-hatred. Brian ended up in Prince Albert Penitentiary, what is reputed to be the San Quentin of Canadian prisons. Brian was put in solitary confinement and there he says he discovered "the trip beyond", an experience that changed his life.

One gets the impression that this LP was recorded in front of a live audience with the sounds of applause and laughter appearing. I find it odd that the audience occasionally starts laughing at inappropriate moments in Brian's lecture or rather the sounds of laughter are cued at inappropriate moments. I confess that I did laugh at a couple of Brian's "jokes", both of them about acts of theft. It sounds to me that there was no live audience present when Brian spoke, just sounds generated in a studio where Brian recorded this album.

Brian Ruud is still preaching, warning people about the dangers of drugs. He also still somewhat has his blonde afro. Besides preaching, Brian Ruud is a motivational speaker and consultant according to his website.

The album is entertaining and even inspiring enough that listeners will want to go from a bum trip to the trip beyond.

John Cook - And God Gave Me a Fix: The John Cook Story

John Cook was not always an evangelist. He used to be an actor who went by the name Sonny Austin. He mainly had bit parts and he was also a stuntman. He was on the receiving end of John Wayne and Lee Marvin fight scenes as John tells the audience. When he was not doing his day job, John was living a life doing drugs, drinking, smoking, partying, carrousing around and getting into real fights (none involved John Wayne or Lee Marvin). In other words, he lived the life of a sinner. John did just about anything that was available to get high including sniffing glue, smoking marijuana, and injecting dope.

The drugs and the Hollywood lifestyle started to take a toll on John who had everything including jewels, Cadillacs, tailor-made suits, beautiful women, swimming pools, etc. Before he decided to leave Hollywood for the slower environs of Missouri, John was involved in a terrible family tragedy. He also attempted to cut his wrists. Eventually he departed Hollywood suffering the effects of heavy drug and alcohol use, but stopped in northwestern Oklahoma. This is where he handcuffed himself to his bed so he could go turkey and kick his drug habit. He did that and became a Christian.

He ended up in Oklahoma City. John does not say how he ended up there. Apparently when this record came out, John Cook was on the circuit preaching against the evils of drugs, drinking and smoking as well as telling audiences what a horrible person he was. I'm sure that John scared the bejeezus out of the youth in attendance. I would have been. In fact, on a couple of occasions as a child, I went to hear preachers speak who mostly screamed and ranted about every 15 seconds about the sins of the world. I was frightened enough not to do anything deemed wrong. I think I was more afraid of incurring the wrath of those preachers than of God. These preachers were much more intimidating than John although this record did bring back memories.

This LP was released by C.R.S. Records in Oklahoma City.

Today is the big day. A new era begins. The often misunderestimated George "Dubya" Bush is no longer the president. I'm sure that today will be a sad day for a lot of people especially for those here in Oklahoma and the few other states that voted for Sarah Palin. Since Sarah Palin lost, oops I mean John McCain lost the election, God will no longer have a place in the Oval Office. The White House also will no longer be occupied by a regular guy with whom you want to have a beer with. Now America will look forward to having communism/socialism, devil worship, free love, and worst of all, intellectualism ushered in the consciousness of American society.

I was going to post the Bushisms collection that is a compilation of audio clips where former President GWB articulates his ideas and policies on various topics, but it's not on my laptop. I'm out of town at the moment. However, I did find this gem on my laptop. Vince Hatfield's song was found somewhere on the webs several years ago. Vince wrote this song in 2000 while driving from home to his oil producing business. Sometime after God's president was given the keys to the White House, Vince performed the song at Bush's going away party in Midland, Texas. As Vince sings, indeed Bush has made the world proud of the USA. While listening to this tune, people can look back fondly on the last eight years as Bush has brought back morality and families. Surely, the wonderful man of values and character would not lie about engaging in war of aggression against another country much less committing the act of attacking another country in the first place and putting America into a massive deficit as a result. Now tears will flow because George Bush will no longer lead on.

I could sit all day and stare at that cover.

Oh, but I have a post to write. Willard Cantelon is another good moral man like W. Cleon Skousen who wants to save us all from the evils of LSD. Willard is not exactly a dynamic speaker (in other words, nowhere as exciting as the cover). He's not as much fun to listen to as say Jack Van Impe or Jimmy Swaggart, but the material in his lecture is more than interesting enough to keep one's attention even if it's from a Christian perspective. Although, I don't quite come away being scared out of my wits when Cantelon describes the gruesome details of the effects of LSD. I think that Van Impe would do a lot better job at that. Interestingly, I've noticed that snippets of this album appear on playlists on psychedelic music radio shows.

Ah, screw it, I'm done writing. I want to go back to looking at the cover. Anyone want to engage in a staring contest with the dude on the cover?

Instant Insanity Drugs was released on the Key Records label, the same label that released Tony Dolan's album, previously posted on this blog. I found out that Key Records was a rightwing outfit affiliated with the John Birsch Society when I did a little research on Skousen's background.

Skousen was an FBI agent before he fully delved into writing conservative commentary. He is known for the book The Naked Communist which is about the evils of communism and their diabolical plans to turn America's children into drugged up commies and immoral blasphemers or something like that. Skousen also served on the faculty at Brigham Young University and active in the Mormon Church of the Latter Day Saints. Skousen tries to educate about the dangers of illegal narcotics or "psychedelic drugs". The guy who wrote the liner notes, Vick Knight, Jr., an assistant superintendent in a school district in Orange County, California, claims that:

Skousen brilliantly unmasks the Timothy Learys among us, the Pied Pipers who tell our youngsters they can "turn on, tune in and drop out" by means of potent weeds and seeds and chemical compounds. He tells why there is no such thing as a "good trip".

Then Vick says this LP should be required listening for every student, parent, educator and law enforcement officer. If enough of us, through this medium, become aware of the potential chromosomal damage and long-lasting psychotic aftereffects of the mind-bending drugs, then perhaps Tommy Forrester, and countless others, will not have died in vain.
