Mike Warnke - A Christian Perspective on Halloween
LP released in 1979
From the liner notes:
A Christian Perspective on Halloween was produced as a one hour radio show broadcasted initially on approximately 1,000 stations nationwide. It is a documentary providing historical background on the origin of Halloween, current information on the significance given it by members of occult groups, and, suggestions for alternative celebrations.
Those who know Mike Warnke as a comedian should not expect this album to be humorous. It is genuinely captivating and we believe it will provide helpful information on Halloween and answer questions some people have regarding Mike's past.
Though it was not at first our intention to make the show available except by radio, requests have been sufficient to make possible this public offering. We have preserved a radio show format as much as possible.
Our special thanks to WWGM radio in Nashville, Tennessee, where this program was recorded and first aired, and to Benton White who was then program director.

It has been revealed that "Christian comedian" Mike Warnke's past is not as interesting as he says it is. (Is "Christian comedian" an oxymoron?) Warnke wrote and published a book The Satan Seller and recorded LPs such as the one in this post where he proclaims he was head of a coven and a Satanist high priest. An article in the Christian magazine Cornerstone by journalists Jon Trott and Mike Hertenstein says otherwise.
ReplyDeleteMike Warnke has greatly exaggerated his past. I am truly disappointed with Warnke. When I bought this LP at a library sale several years ago, I forgot all about Warnke. Actually, I knew little about him. I admit I thought it was awesome that I am listening to an LP by someone who used to be an evil dude (that's what he said on the record, of course). Not that I condoned what he claimed to have done or that I bought his claims that celebrating Halloween was celebrating Satan.
It is certain that Warnke has done un-Christian acts (such as lying). It is sad. I thought I had an interesting LP on my hands with tales of his exploits as a Satanist. So, if what he says is mostly made-up, why am I posting this? It is the only Halloween recording I have on hand. However, this LP is still entertaining. I am not talking about the segments of Mike being a comedian. Mike perpetrates and spread the usual Halloween myths throughout this LP including the ones where people commonly put razor blades in apples and spike cookies with LSD where these apples and cookies are given to children when they are trick-or-treating. Warnke also spreads rumors of Satanism being widespread. Overall, the listener learns that Halloween is dangerous and Warnke proposes a "fall harvest festival" type holiday to celebrate instead of Halloween.
*shudders* ;)
ReplyDeletehiya, big fan of your blog, and I finally found some time to create a blog for my own collection of 'oddities'. Most records will be in dutch, but, I'll be posting some non-dutch gems as well :) Anyway, I figured you might like them as well, so, check it out if you feel like it: http://stereofound.wordpress.com/
ReplyDeletekeep on posting!

I checked last week but didn't see a Halloween post, and now here it is. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNow, if you can find the "Beginner" cassette companion to "Advanced Elk Calling" for a Christmas post, that would be wonderful. (I've been following the Advanced instructions, but no elk have shown up yet. I think I need the Beginner course.)
Happy Halloween.
KL,
ReplyDeleteI'll try to find a copy of the "Beginner" version of "Elk Calling". I may have better luck finding elk than this tape though. ;)
I may or may not have another Halloween post this week. There's not much interesting Halloween-related records or tapes that show up in my area.
Happy Halloween to you too!
What ever happened to Mike Warnke's expected release of "Troubadour of Trouble"? Making up stories is okay as long as one states as such. In the end he truly got "hurt modern" (Warnke line).
