Bill Glass - Get "Up" for the Game

Bill Glass - Get "Up" for the Game

Another one from Bill Glass. On this record, the former pro football player speaks in front of a group of teenagers somewhere in Arkansas. He uses more football metaphors in an attempt to motivate people for not only athletic competitions but for the game of life. The speech on this record has been called by high school principals and university administrators the greatest speech they have ever heard as opposed to the other record where it's merely one of the greatest speeches they've ever heard. That's what the liner notes say so it's quite true.

No doubt this speech will pump up whoever listens to it and instill a winning attitude. Glass makes a strong appeal to the two major coexisting religions here in Oklahoma, football and Christianity. Now if I may be excused as I'm pumped up and ready to go. I have a Super Bowl party to help put together.

Bill Glass - The Most Important Thing

Bill Glass - The Most Important Thing

To commemorate the gladiatorial spectacle known as the Super Bowl (championship game of the National Football League (NFL)) taking place next week here in America, the Basement presents a talk given by former professional football player Bill Glass. Glass tells anecdotes from his playing days and says how people can apply his football experiences and other football metaphors to daily Christian living experiences. One learns that there is an opponent harder to defend than even the New England Patriots. That opponent is Satan. At some places on this record, Glass comes close to giving a rah-rah speech and the listener feels pumped up enough to want to run through a brick wall for God or at least tackle the hell out of somebody. [Pun sort of intended.]

People from all walks of life such as players, coaches, parents, school principals, leaders and salemen say this recording is one of the finest they have ever heard. That's what the liner notes say so it must be true.

Also from the liner notes is a brief bio of Bill Glass:

Bill Glass made a name for himself as one of the most outstanding football players in the National Football League, playing with Cleveland during their championship years. He was a consensus All-American at Baylor University in 1956. He played pro ball twelve years with Detroit and Cleveland and played in the Pro Bowl in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1968.
Bill retired from football in June, 1969. He has since devoted himself to influencing young and old alike to a more motivated and fuller life. He is an evangelist whom many have compared with Billy Graham. He is widely respected as an athletic consultant particularly in the field of motivation. He is president of the Bill Glass Evangelistic Association which conducts several city-wide crusades across the country each year. He is also the author of three best selling books.

Dr. Michael Dean - Dr. Michael Dean's Hypnosis Record

Dr. Michael Dean - Dr. Michael Dean's Hypnosis Record

Dr. Michael Dean is the "only hypnotist in show business with a legitimate Doctor of Philosophy Degree." That's what the liner notes on the back cover says so it has to be true. On this record, Dr. Dean wants to use the power of hypnotism for more than entertainment purposes. He wants to help you lose weight, remember everything, gain self-confidence, do better at school, stop smoking, etc. Coincidentally, those are things I need help with except for stopping smoking which I do not even bother to think about picking up a cigarette. The eyeball on the cover is key. Look at the eyeball. Dr. Dean wants to help you be happy and successful. Look at the eyeball and listen to his voice.

Dr. Dean also wants to teach you how to hypnotise yourself. He wants you to be happy and successful. You can do all of these yourself. He wants you to be self-reliant not rely on some show business hypnotist to hypnotise you to happiness and success. I'd rather hear his voice when I want to be hypnotised. He has a very pleasant and soothing voice. I don't want to hypnotise myself anyway. How do I get myself out of the hypnotic state?

I shall stop writing this post. I'm going deeper and deeper into sleep with each breath that I take. I'm going deeper and deeper into sleep with each breath that I take. Way down. I'm going deeper and deeper into sleep with each breath that I take. Way down. My eyes are getting heavier and heavier with each breath that I take. the more deeper and deeper into sleep with each breath that I take

Jerry Falwell - The End of the World: How Near is It?

Jerry Falwell - The End of the World: How Near is it?

Jerry Falwell is a well-known televangelist who founded his own church, Thomas Road Baptist Church and university, Lynchburg Baptist College (now called Liberty University). He also founded the Moral Majority organization who helped Ronald Reagan win election for president of the United States. He passed away last year on May 15. Jerry held far right-wing viewpoints and wasn't afraid to communicate those viewpoints such as his views that homosexuality should be condemned. He even offered his own theory why the 9/11 attacks occurred. He was also afraid of the Teletubbies who he believes that these characters would cause kids to become gay.

This particular record is an episode of Jerry's radio program, The Old Time Gospel Hour. Side One is full of musical performances by the Lynchburg Baptist College Chorale and gospel singer Doug Oldham. The songs are standard gospel fare. Side Two presents Jerry's theories on the end of the world or Apocalypse scenario. In his later years, Jerry still believed in this stuff.

Note: There is a few seconds on side two where the needle was stuck and I had to nudge it forward.

The members of the band and other credits:

Gene - vocals
Butch - bass, background vocals
Bradford - guitar, background vocals
Matt - drums, background vocals
guest background vocals: Kemper Crabb, Bob, Marie, and Joey Knight

Lust Control is a fundamentalist Christian conservative punk band from Austin, Texas that were active from 1988 to the mid 1990s. Their sound resembles secular bands such as The Ramones, Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies. They performed live anonymously in a similar manner as The Residents by wearing ski masks and not revealing their identities; they only used their first names in the credits. Lust Control is not afraid to put out songs about sex which deal specifically with abortion, abstinance, marriage and "The Big 'M'". Lust Control is also direct with their viewpoints of controversial issues from a Christian perspective unlike most contemporary Christian bands. They believe that adhering to fundamentialist Christian principles is the best way to live. The band included a Bible study as an accompaniment to the songs.

I found a cassette copy of this at a Goodwill in Moore, Oklahoma during 2004. I rank it among my top 10 thrift store finds. I recall stumbling upon the song "The Big "M"" sometime during my freshman year in college while scanning the radio. It was one of the funniest things I've ever heard and never have been forgotten. Shortly afterwards, I found out it was an all "contemporary Christian" music station and it seemed to be in the regular rotation for a while although no DJ was there to announce the name of the band nor the song. I found out this information much later from a website.
There is an interview with Lust Control's lead vocalist here. Their identities were revealed.
Postcript: Lust Control recently reissued a remastered version of the album with 18 bonus tracks including songs from their previous album This is a Condom Nation, live songs, commentaries, the album release party radio spot and karoake versions of "The Big "M"" and "Planned Parenthood". It's available at the band's website.

Jimmy Swaggart - The Ring of Fire

Jimmy Swaggart - The Ring of Fire

Jimmy preaches to the youth of America about perceived evils such as sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll (especially acid rock), womens' reproductive rights, miniskirts, and sex. This particular record was recorded during the late 1960s (either 1968 or 1969). Back then, it seems that Jimmy knew what he was talking about, especially sex. Later in the 1980s, as is the case with most self-righteous individuals especially preachers, the married Swaggart displays hypocrisy by engaging in adultery with a prostitute at a motel. There's also an interesting tidbit connecting Jimmy to an important rock 'n' roll figure. I actually didn't know this until I heard this record.

A few years ago (I believe 2003), I found a copy of this record inside a Goodwill at Midwest City, Oklahoma, a suburb east of Oklahoma City. This is one of my favorite Goodwill finds and this record provides much entertainment. Portions of this record have been sampled by Meat Beat Manifesto and Christian Marclay. If anyone else sampled this, please let me know.

In the "Where Are They Now?" portion of this post, the defrocked Swaggart still heads his own ministry, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. He also still preaches on TV, most notably on Spike TV according to his web site. Jimmy seemingly has been banished to obscurity as a flock of televangleists have replaced him on the totem pole in terms of followers, prestige , notoriety, and media coverage.

Jack Van Impe - Hell Without Hell

Jack Van Impe - Hell Without Hell

Let's kick off this blog with something from Mr. Van Impe. Jack Van Impe is an American televangelist based in Michigan whose main basic message is the world will end sometime soon. He cohosts a television show called Jack Van Impe Presents with his wife Rexella. Van Impe has been called the "Walking Bible" for his ability to memorize all of the Bible verses and to come up with a Bible verse to fit the sermon or message he is delivering.

This is an early record from sometime in the 1960s. It was recorded in Canton, Ohio. Here, Van Impe asserts that Hell is discussed in the New Testament although there is no mention of the word Hell. Some other religions mention that the Hebrew and Greek words in scripture mean only the grave. Van Impe points out what they really mean is Hell. Van Impe recorded a few other records during the same time period that deliver a similar fire and brimstone message along with sermons about the Apocalypse.

Introduction to the Basement

Welcome to A Basement of Curiosities. Here in the Basement, mainly audio oddball/weird/unusual/novelty recordings will be highlighted and perhaps discussed. Most items will be LPs and some will be tapes and CDs. I will tell you from the start that this blog will not be updated too often as I have other online projects not to mention a life believe it or not. Ideally, I will update this blog once a week.
I am aware that there are other blogs and websites that have been doing this sort of thing for years and I have taken a few pointers and inspiration from those sites. I do hope to post stuff that no one else has. I have wanted to do this type of blog for some time as there are interesting used LPs, tapes and CDs that I cannot resist purchasing while digging for music at places such as thrift stores, flea markets, antique stores, swap meets, garage/yard sales and other places that have used merchandise for sale.

Hope that you have as much fun visiting as I am posting.
