Earl Nightingale - 20 Minutes That Can Change Your Life

Earl Nightingale - 20 Minutes That Can Change Your Life

released on LP in 1966

I spent 20 minutes of my life listening to this and I must say that those 20 minutes could indeed change my life. Sure I listened to a numerous amount of success-motivation life-improvement records in my life. However, I haven't felt as transformed into a new man as much as I have from listening to Earl Nightingale's 20 minutes. Good thing too as I cannot ever have those 20 minutes back.

Like many other humans, I have wondered why some people were successful in life while many more were not. Earl Nightingale certainly wondered about the same thing. From those 20 minutes, it becomes clear to me that I seem like such a loser in life because I have not been concerned with focusing my efforts towards obtaining more income and to be worth a lot of money by age 65. I have been wasting my time trying to contribute knowledge to society and helping people find information through my work in real life and in some ways my in my virtual life. I have tried to make the world a better place through education and enrichment. Alas, it turns out that I have been living life in the wrong manner.

Thanks to the smooth voice of Earl, I have righted the course of my life. From now on, I will strive to increase my income and therefore increase my wealth. I will be worth millions by age 65. I will have to put off my goal of becoming a professional librarian since professional librarians are underpaid therefore I will end up being worth only thousands by age 65 if I'm lucky. I suppose that I'll have to go get an MBA (Master's of Business Administration). That will be difficult because I can't afford to pay for more classes. Most of my paycheck is going towards paying student loans that were used for getting the Master of Library Science degree.

Then I remembered Earl talking about attitude on side 2. I need to change my attitude and emulate the attitude and personality of a person I want to be like. The person that Earl has in mind is someone who already has a high income and is projected to be worth a lot of dough at age 65. Gosh, there's no one like that in my chosen profession. Perhaps I need to read Fortune or Forbes to find a 1%er to emulate and admire. I'm sure the 1%ers have the right attitude while the rest of the people, who are being used to make more money for the 1%ers, seem to lack the right attitude.

Earl recommends coming up with at least 5 ideas per day on how to increase one's income. Earl says that one doesn't have to come up with any ideas on the weekend. He says that 25 ideas per week presents opportunities for achieving the goal of increasing income. He says some ideas are worthless while a few could be excellent. The point is to have a positive attitude and keep coming up with ideas to increase wealth, forget the rest of society, most of them are losers anyway who have a poor attitude. Earl says that the more one contributes to his efforts, the more rewards there will be for his efforts. It is implied that one must work more hours to get more money. BTW, the record is targeted at males meaning that the women are there to provide support for their men to increase their income while keeping the house clean and fixing meals. Another implication is that women don't need to increase their income. The top rungs of society must agree as they're still paying women less than men in the same jobs. Geez, if only those women weren't so darn uppity, they could go back to keeping house and serving the men in their quest for more income instead of striving for equality.

So, here are 20 minutes that too can change your life (or not you loser). At least, you get to hear the smooth voice of Earl.

[U.S. Navy] - Someone Special

[U.S. Navy] - Someone Special

released on LP [no date given]

This is one of those records that were intended for use by radio stations for airing recruiting pitches for the U.S. Navy or what are called public service messages. I'll make an educational guess that this was produced sometime during the 1970s.
The intended recipients include smart folks being encouraged to enter into training programs for advanced electronics and nuclear energy, those who don't want to serve all the time being offered training in Naval Reserves, and former Navy personnel being courted to come back to the Navy. National and local versions of these messages are on opposite sides of the LP. Side 2 of the LP includes instrumental versions of the music used. The music is played in various styles such as Latin, soul, rock, and country. From what I can tell, the different musical styles were supposed to be used for targeting various demographic segments throughout the U.S. It's too bad that there's not more music as I rather enjoyed it especially the Latin versions. It sounds a lot better than the shit music being used nowadays in public service announcement/recruiting pitches for the military.

Telling from the condition of the vinyl and the jacket, it seems to have been used quite a bit or people could have mishandled the record. Someone thought this record was worth a quarter when he or she tried to sell this copy. (I paid $1 for it at a thrift store.) Whoever priced this 25 cents didn't do a good job of covering up the torn part. I'll bet that someone else tried to sell this earlier and put a price tag on it. Then either the person who priced this 25 cents or someone else attempted to peel off the original price tag and ended up tearing a portion of the cover.
I'm sure this record is not special in the collectors' market, but that doesn't mean that whoever listens or comes in possession of it is any less special.

Dr. Robert Parrish - Listen and Lose

Dr. Robert Parrish - Listen and Lose

released on LP in 1972

From looking at the album's title, you would probably think that I'm trying to turn you into a loser, you know being contrary to the pro-winning attitude championed constantly on this blog because this is a blog for winners. You could not be more wrong. In fact, the "lose" part refers to losing weight. That's what this record is all about. Yes, we here at the Basement (actually meaning my lonely self and that stray cat that keeps hanging around the porch trying to mooch food off of me) do encourage you people out there to lose some pounds if there are too many pounds.

This LP promises that you can lose weight not by going on a diet (which I always doubted would work), but by imagining yourself to be slim and trim. I think the liner notes explains this quite adequately:

All you have to do to begin this weight loss system is to listen to a recording. The recording teaches you how to relax - and then it teaches you some eating habits. You learn these new ideas quickly, simply because you are so relaxed and therefore receptive to fresh ideas. ... There is a conflict between your will power and your preconceived ideas. When you resolve this conflict, you can begin to lose weight. "Listen and Lose" doesn't give you new will power. "Listen and Lose" gives you new imagination - a new image, if you will, of yourself and a system to help you achieve this image. ... [The record] can really help you. It can open the way for you to turn the imagined image into the real image of you. All you have to do is listen.

The back cover also provides Parrish's background and credentials:

The author of "Listen and Lose", Dr. Robert E. Parrish, is eminently qualified to write about the psychological aspects of becoming slender. Through his professional experiences as a University professor and a practicing psychologist he has developed a deep sensitivity to the problems and struggles of individuals who are desirous of a change in their personal lives but who are without positive goals and a realistic workable plan.

Since 1960 he has been researching and developing procedures for relaxation, utilizing effectively the laws of suggestions, visualizing procedures, and goal setting for learning and personal development.

Dr. Parrish received his Bachelors degree, Masters degree and in 1962 his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.

Denby Brandon - Power for Your Purpose/The Secrets of Leadership

Denby Brandon - Power for Your Purpose/The Secrets of Leadership

released on LP

I suppose that winning sales contests or selling the most of whatever product or service in your company qualifies one to put out records like this one. Denby Brandon certainly qualified himself to put out a record. His Memphis office won first place in a sales contest that took place during one month in 1961 that was initiated by Pan-American Life Insurance company. Not only did Denby run an insurance office that somehow convinced lots and lots of people to buy life insurance, Denby also hosted some TV program called Your Future Unlimited. I think the show was about self-improvement. Denby dispenses tips on this LP on how to get power and keep power, inspiring advice for business leaders and leadership advice.

I sure learned a lot from this LP. Not only that, I feel inspired to gain power over others and create my own destiny and destiny for others. I'm sure glad my copy of this LP was sitting among the flea market racks for only one dollar. Who knew that the way to success could be so cheap?

Tom Vu video clips

Come in. We're still having our birthday/anniversary party here in the Basement. There's a little cake and ice cream left. It's all chocolate, of course.

While I've been celebrating, I've been watching some inspirational video clips of a rich gentleman named Tom Vu. As you have seen from the video clip in the previous post, Tom wants to help people make money by conducting seminars explaining how he was able to make his millions and people can use his techniques to make millions too. He put out an infomercial back in the late 1980s advertising his services while displaying some of his possessions. Tom may have asked some of his female friends (which is quite notable that they conform to society's standards of beauty enabling them to have confidence for them to wear only bikinis) to help out on his infomercial just by hanging around with him. (Most likely, what really happened is that he paid them handsomely).

Tom Vu apparently made a killing in real estate investments especially from bankruptcies and foreclosures. He was able to buy yachts, cars, mansions, "waterfalls", polo shirts, etc. According to his infomercial, Tom used to be poor where he grew up with 9 siblings. Tom held low-status, low-paying jobs including one where he worked at a country club which he tells about in the video clip below. Then Tom ended up where he was because he is such a hard worker. I believe that Tom retired from real estate investing and is now a professional poker player. I also heard rumors that he's still doing real estate investments particularly with condos in Las Vegas.

The video clip below this paragraph is just Tom all by his lonesome. No young women in bikinis are present. It's just Tom by one of his luxury cars and in front of his "waterfall" installed in his front yard. Tom explains how he was determined to be successful. As mentioned already, Tom asked some old rich guy how he got rich and how Tom too can become rich. The old rich guy told Tom three words that is the secret to success. Of course, Tom does not tell what are those three words. Instead, Tom says that he will only tell those three words at one of his seminars. Tom goes on to say that his friends and strangers thought he was crazy for trying to be successful, to be rich. Those people who doubted Tom are losers while Tom is a winner. It seems he got some new friends when he became successfully rich.

The second video clip below this paragraph is more of Tom's infomercial. This time his friends, the women in bikinis, are in full display. Tom tries to inspire the viewers with his success stories and advertises his seminars. Tom says his course is not the same as everybody else's. If he brought along his friends in bikinis to his seminars, then he would be definitely be right. (I wonder if he actually did just that.)

I also have these clips and a few others available for the taking if anyone wants to watch these on their mp3/video players or not have to be connected online.

There will be the usual oddball LPs, tapes, and maybe CDs and Internet finds forthcoming. There's some "good" stuff in the pipeline. Also, sometime in the next few months, I may upload some videos myself from my collection rather than just posting other peoples' video uploads that are on YouTube. BTW, thanks to the folks who originally posted these video clips.

Paul Scheele - Deep Relaxation

Paul Scheele - Deep Relaxation

cassette released in 1993

*note: both sides of the cassette are the same

Are you being stressed out by the holiday season (shopping for gifts, visiting relatives or being lonely because there's no family and friends available, being constantly bombarded by Xmas music, pressure to celebrate accordingly, etc.)? In the spirit of generosity by yours truly, I am offering this item to help you relax from all of the pressures of the holiday season. Yes, this is another present from me to you.

This is not anything subliminal, this is what is called "paraliminal" as the cover says. Dictionary.com nor any other similar dictionary-type site does not give a definition of this term "paraliminal". Apparently "paraliminal" is where a soothing voice can be heard. Then sometime later, two soothing voices from the same person are heard as what happens around the 21-minute mark of the recording. I think it sounds cool and it is my favorite part of the tape. The voice on the tape is by Paul Scheele, founder of an organization called Learning Strategies Corporation. He has produced and released many other "paraliminal" tapes focusing on self-improvement topics.
When you're finished listening to this tape, you should feel refreshed. That's what Mr. Scheele in his calm soothing voice says, so it shall be.

A few tips are provided in the liner notes. They include:

* Use stereo headphones. (If you are using a monaural tape player, place it at your left side.)
* Be in a place without distractions. [Duh.]
* Do not listen to this tape while driving or operating machinery. [Duh.]
* Sit or lie back in a comfortable position when listening.
* Give your attention to the tape. [Duh.]
* Do not force concentration.
* Relax as deeply as you like. You may move on to anything else whenever you desire by simply opening your eyes.
* At times two voices will be speaking simultaneously. At times they may seem to move. [Told you it sounds cool.] It is best not to follow the words of each voice, but go with the flow, rhythm and movement of the voices and sounds.
* HAVE FUN! [Does this mean I should play this at a party? The thought never occurred to me to relax and have fun at the same time.]

I hope all of you have a joyful and deeply relaxing Xmas and/or holidays.

Helen Gurley Brown - Lessons in Love

Helen Gurley Brown - Lessons in Love

*special thanks to jay strange for this informative record

LP released in 1963

Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go everywhere.

Before she became the chief editor at
Cosmopolitan magazine for a long time where she transformed the magazine from a not widely read cultural literary magazine to a magazine containing photos of stick thin models and articles about sex positions and dating, Helen Gurley Brown wrote a book called Sex and the Single Girl which became a bestseller in 1962. Much of the book's content was radical for its time and interestingly her husband, the late producer David Brown, was the one who prompted Helen to write a book about her days as a single woman.

Sometime soon after the publication of the book, it was planned by the Crescendo Record Company for Helen to record an album of her reading portions from her book. However, Warner Brothers who was making a movie version of the book at the time, owned the recording rights to the book, so the audio version was nixed. So, Helen came up with new material that resulted in the LP,
Lessons in Love. Each side of the LP contained advice each for men and girls (that's what they're referred to instead of women).

Helen dishes advice on how to discreetly cheat on your wives or husbands (it's only natural and bound to happen, right). Helen offers advice each for secretaries and bosses to maintain relationships in and out of the office. There's hope for midgets , I mean little men, to have success picking up girls. There's even hope for plain or ugly girls to land men as Helen helpfully explains how this is possible. Helen also tells how men can reject a girl and how a girl can reject a man. At the end of each side, in a bit of contradiction from her stance that cheating is okay, Helen explains how a man and a girl can remain faithful and love only his wife or her husband respectively.

So listen to the original Cosmo Girl tell you how to live your love life.

Donice - Aerobic Celebration: Aerobic Exercise to Contemporary Christian Music

Donice - Aerobic Celebration: Aerobic Exercise to Contemporary Christian Music

LP released in 1982

This is America's first Christian aerobics LP. That's what the cover says so it must be true. As this LP's release date shows, fitness has been emphasized for quite a while in the Christian world. There are Christian programs dedicated to fitness and nutrition. There are even fitness segments on The 700 Club and fitness and wellness tips offered by Pat Robertson in between moments of calling for assassination of leaders in foreign countries and claiming that the people in earthquake ravaged nations have made a deal with Satan.

So you the visitor can use this LP to also help you get in shape and looking fit and trim with some 1980s contemporary Christian music in the background (listen to the first 24 seconds of "Highwire", it's some hot schitt, unfortunately, the rest of the song goes downhill from there) and some young lady named Donice leading. The LP came with an instruction manual with photographs.

Now for the purpose of this album's existence taken from the back cover:

WHY AN AEROBIC ALBUM FOR CHRISTIANS?

We have created an album of aerobic exercises set to Christian music for these reasons:

* because we believe that aerobic fitness is a crucial part of caring for your body, the temple of the Holy Spirit

* because we're aware that in today's world, thousands of Christians (and non-Christians) are getting involved in physical fitness activities

* because we believe that the body, through movements such as these aerobic exercies can and should be used to praise the Lord and celebrate His works

AEROBIC CELEBRATION (Aerobic Exercise To Contemporary Christian Music) provides you with about 10 minutes of warm-up activity, 21 minutes of continuous aerobics and 6 1/2 minutes of cool-down time. The first two songs, "Until He Comes" and "Nature of Love" will prepare your body for a good, hearty workout by stretching your muscles gently. The last two songs, "Angels" and "He That Overcomes," will give your body time to wind down to its natural rhythm gradually and healthily.

Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds: 2 Miles

Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds: 2 Miles

*special thanks to KL from NYC for this one

I have declared this week to be fitness week. We could use some exercise. We all need to get in better shape, right. I know I do. I sit on my butt behind a computer at work and I sit on my butt behind a computer on my time off from work. I need to be more proactive in maintaining physical fitness. I'm not just talking about bending and moving my arms while digging through crates and boxes of records either. Since all the good looking and popular people are exercising, I might as well do it too to get in shape and I need all the help I can get in getting dates. Being healthy is nice too.

Leslie Sansone is a fitness professional in the health industry. She has several DVDs currently on the market. She is also on a few CDs such as this one. This CD is meant to be listened to while walking. This one is the 2 mile version not no soft 1/4 mile version. We here at the Basement believe in doing things right and doing them to the max. Actually, this is the only one we have.

The idea behind this CD is to play this to let Leslie motivate and preach to you while you are walking to lose some pounds or to prevent gaining any pounds. It seems awkward walking with a CD player and the things usually cause the CDs to skip if the player is budged an inch. The exercise CD may not have been a great idea or was it? With mp3 players and CD-ripping tools included on affordable computers, this CD can be ripped as mp3 files on the computer then the files can be transferred to an mp3 player. Now CDs like this can work as people can use their mp3 players when exercising.

The background music is high BPM dance cover versions of Motown hits. There are tracks with just the music, but I didn't include those as I found the music too unbearable. Only the tracks with Leslie's voice are included.

David Bubar - David Bubar Speaks to You

David Bubar - David Bubar Speaks to You

David Bubar was a Southern Baptist minister. Not only that, he was "a Christian clairvoyant" who is claimed to have "a gift of clairvoyance from God." Bubar founded the Spiritual Outreach Society (S.O.S.) based in Memphis, Tennessee (USA). The S.O.S. was later renamed First Century Church.

There is not any information available online about any of Bubar's LP releases or his discography. I am only aware of him releasing this album and another one called Psychic Sitting. I found a copy of the other album being sold on some online second-hand record merchant. Bubar speaks to you on this album saying you have some sort of special spiritual abilities. Bubar does not talk about psychic powers on this album though he seems to be hinting at the possibility of people possessing psychic powers. This is mostly David Bubar the Southern Baptist minister talking to you.

Back then, David Bubar has been gaining a reputation for his supposed psychic abilities as well as a spiritual advisor. The liner notes say that:

An advisor to governors, a counselor to clergymen, a personal guide to entertainment luminaries, an inspiration to space research engineers, a university lecturer, the personal friend of professionals, college students and common folk in trouble across the nation, David Noble Bubar's phone is ringing night and day.

The liner notes quote a prominent person speaking highly of David Bubar:

Charles Moeller, president of Ohio Decorative Products Corp., and Edgerton Metal Products Corporation, auto and home appliance accessories manufacturing firms, said, "We have been very fortunate since I met David ... you don't just break into the auto industry as fast and as good as we have. He seems to 'see' things." David Bubar is a member of the board of directors for Moeller, serving without pay.

David Bubar supposedly saw something or rather "got vibrations of an impending explosion." An article in Time magazine published on May 5, 1975 reported that Charles Moeller was indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to blow up the Sponge Rubber Products factory in Shelton, Connecticut, United States. Ohio Decorative Products Corp. was the parent company of Sponge Rubber Products.

The article further reports:

According to the indictment, Moeller paid $50,000 in company funds to David Bubar, 47, a trim, wavy-haired Baptist minister and self-proclaimed clairvoyant from Memphis who purports to have foreseen a variety of specific deaths, illnesses and other disasters. Bubar met Moeller about ten years ago, became his spiritual guru and ultimately a director of Ohio Decorative Products. He supposedly served Sponge Rubber Products as a water-purification consultant, annoying various managers by poking around the main Shelton plant unescorted and as he pleased. But the plant, so far as anyone knew, had no water problems.

Two weeks before the bombing, according to his brother John, a minister in Cheshire, Conn., Bubar "got vibrations" of an impending explosion. The Government contends that the psychic preacher indulged in a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy: Bubar allegedly paid out part of Moeller's money to Peter Betres, 54, a Butler, Pa., hotelkeeper who in turn paid off a gallery of other suspects. Thus recruited, the arson team bought dynamite, detonating material and 24 drumfuls of gasoline. Then they gathered at the plant on the day of the crime, together with Bubar, who arranged to let them in. They proceeded to blow up the factory.

Moeller was aquitted while Bubar wound up in prison. When Bubar was given a long prison sentence, the S.O.S./First Century Church did not last long.

Henry Blythe - Stop Smoking

Henry Blythe - Stop Smoking

*special thanks to jay strange for this

Yes, this is another "stop smoking" or "quit smoking" album. If the other ones didn't work, perhaps this one will. Henry Blythe is a hypnotist whose method is to, of course, hypnotize you into a state where you're supposed to be suggestive to Henry's words stating that you will quit smoking. (I couldn't find anything on Henry Blythe, BTW.) Henry uses a (metaphorical) tool called a hypnotic sponge to cleanse your thoughts of desires of wanting to smoke filthy cigarettes. Will the hypnotic sponge cure you smokers? At near the end of Side 1 "Stop Smoking", Henry brings the listeners out of their hypnotic state. Henry claps but it is inaudible. However, he raises his voice when counting to five and goes into a more frantic pace which I suppose he seems to try to make up for the inaudible clap. Not sure if people came out of their hypnotic states though. ;) Side 2 "How to Relax" is I am sure self-explanatory.

What makes this album better is that Henry wants you to show his picture while you are playing his record. The liner notes explain:

Place the portrait of Henry Blythe on the front of this sleeve on a table or mantle shelf and sit in an easy relaxed position facing the portrait whilst the record is being played.

Choose a room for this Hypnotic Treatment where you are not likely to be Disturbed. Follow Henry Blythe's spoken instructions very intently and BELIEVE that he is actually in the room with you, that it is not merely a photographic face and a recorded voice - but that he is in the room with you in SPIRIT - a BLYTHE spirit.

You will be astonished at the results.

Play this record EVERY day for FOUR days and treat very seriously this genuine effort to STOP YOU SMOKING.

I think that is an awesome idea. Why don't more people tell their listeners or readers to place their picture while listening or reading? I am printing out copies of Henry's portrait. I want to hang it on my wall. I can have the spirit of Henry with me most of the time. I may even print out a small copy of Henry's portrait to carry around in my wallet so I can have Henry with me all the time. If you didn't know Henry was a hypnotist, one could guess that he is a distinguished gentleman. He looks like he could be a Nobel-prize winning scientist or an acclaimed author of some brilliant novel or some sort of intellectual. You can put a picture of him on your wall and impress people by telling them what I said in the last sentence. They'll be impressed and yet no one will really know. I think Henry was aspiring to be idolized and maybe now he'll get his wish.

This post includes bonus material. The track is a collaboration between jay strange and The Bevis Frond (calling themselves The Bizaardvarks) named "The Hypnotic Sponge". Bill Gove - Time: Its New Dimensions

Bill Gove - Time: Its New Dimensions

*special thanks to KL from NYC for this one

I've posted records by salesmen before. I have no doubt you already know that if you're a loyal visitor to this blog and paying attention or if you're a newbie and possess ESP powers. However, in over two years of this blog's existence, nothing by America's #1 salesman has ever been posted until today. That's right. I have the record by America's #1 salesman ready for you to listen to. I bet you that you woke up earlier in the day never guessing that you are about to listen to America's #1 salesman later in the day. Lucky you. It's almost as good as waking up on yet another ordinary day only to find out you won the lottery later in the day.

On this record is a recording of a speech given by the #1 salesman in America. From the title and cover, one would think that he talks about time which would be really cool especially if he talked about time travel and its possible effects on creating several alternate realities or something like that. That is not so. I think this record is about selling although it's sometimes hard to tell as he keeps cracking jokes.

A glance at the liner notes reveal what Bill Gove really means by the dimensions of time is:

We can't control the clock - but we can (if we want to) control the DIMENSIONS OF TIME: HABIT-ENERGY-ATTITUDE-and COMMUNICATIONS. Time is not a separate entity - it is merely an extension of habit - energy - attitude - and communications.

Um okay. If America's #1 salesman says so then so it is.

James T. Mangan - How to Sell the Prospect by Selling Yourself

James T. Mangan - How to Sell the Prospect by Selling Yourself

LP released in 1962

James T. Mangan was President of Mangan & Mangan, "a Chicago firm offering sales counseling, public relations, designed advertising, and creative advertising ideas", when this record was put out by the Businessmen's Record Club. No doubt Businessmen's Record Club LPs were common in the offices of corporate America back in the day. Anyway on this LP, Mangan has a 3-part formula which he explains:

1. How to sell yourself to the prospect

2. How to sell your product or service

3. How to sell the firm you represent

So before you can sell vacuum cleaners, swampland, or any other crap that people don't really want, you have to be able to sell yourself. You have to have self-confidence and it would help to have a network of contacts to establish your reputation. Hopefully your reputation will be a good one.
I'm wondering how successful this formula was for Mangan's own company. I went to my online best pal to find out how the company is doing today. My online best pal did not turn up anything about the company. That should tell you something. Then I asked my online best pal to find out anything about Mangan. You can click on this link to see what was turned up. I was like, wow.

I'm sure that being owner of outer space would enable one to sell oneself. If a salesman (I mean salesperson) owned outer space, I would consider buying something from the salesperson.

Institute of Research & Development - Stop Smoking Forever

Institute of Research & Development - Stop Smoking Forever

cassette released in 1989

This tape is supposed to be helpful in helping smokers kick the habit. Some guy at the beginning emphasizes that the decision is up to the smoker, but there are stories from about 8 former smokers about how they got into the habit and their attempts to quit. There are findings from medical research and psychological tips. There are also reports of the then growing non-smoker movement not wanting to no longer tolerate smokers.

I'm all for quitting smoking, but the production of this tape seems a bit shady. It sounds like there are the same three or four people giving the testimonies of several people. I'm convinced that the people on this tape are actors. They seem to sound like the "testimonials" given by actors in infomercials for various useless crappy products. But hey, whatever helps. It's notable that there is not any info about this Institute of Research & Development operating from Nashville, Tennessee (United States). I wonder if it's still around despite the organization trying to save costs by not paying too many people (assuming that the actors and others involved in production were paid). Overall, the impression is given that this Institute was attempting to cash in on folks desperately trying to kick the habit. However, there is still some interesting material on this tape. And the cover is kinda cool.

Dr. Joseph Murphy - Developing a Wonderful Personality/Communicating with the Subconscious

Dr. Joseph Murphy - Developing a Wonderful Personality/Communicating with the Subconscious

A while back, I found a couple of records by this guy named Dr. Joseph Murphy. There are not any liner notes on the packaging (i.e. no information). However, I was sold on the titles for these records. Upon listening to this record, this guy comes across as a combination of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) self-help guru and preacher. Whether you like it or not, you will feel like you've developed a wonderful personality after listening. I'm sure the other side is self-explanatory. Yes, the divine one upstairs wants to help you know that you have positive attributes so therefore you should realize that you need a postive attitude to develop that wonderful personality that you were born with. Dr. Murphy sounds controversial as he is saying that He is not only the creator of mankind and this world, he is also the self-improvement guru of mankind rather than the usual view of judge, jury and executioner of mankind who are all a bunch of born sinners.

I went to do background research on Dr. Murphy (1898-1981) and I quickly found his bio. He made quite a lot of recordings and wrote a lot of books as I thought he would have done. However, I was surprised when I read his background as he has an academic background in studying Eastern religions. He was even a research fellow at the University of India. He has a Ph.D although there is no mention where he earned his Ph.D or the subject(s) he studied to earn his Ph.D. He was an expert on mysticism and "mind dynamics."

Dr. Murphy was the director and minister of the Church of Divine Science in Los Angeles for 28 years. The
Church of Divine Science is a religious group that is a part of the New Thought movement. New Thought basically consists of metaphysical beliefs that promote positive thinking, the law of attraction, healing, life force, creative visualization and personal power according to that top info resource Wikipedia. Also whoever contributed the entry for "New Thought Movement" in Wikipedia says that New Thought "promotes the ideas that 'Infinite Intelligence' or 'God' is ubiquitous, spirit is the totality of real things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, all sickness originates in the mind, and 'right thinking' has a healing effect." Knowing the background and context of Dr. Murphy's affiliations, the material on this LP starts to make a lot of sense especially when you are in your subconscious. This LP is another one I'll be playing during my hypnopaedia sessions when I go to bed.

Bob Conklin - The Key to Motivation

Bob Conklin - The Key to Motivation

released on LP in 1965

People are losers in life because they do not have any drive or motivation to succeed. That is what Bob Conklin says on this LP. We should care what Bob Conklin says because not only is he successful enough in life to put out a motivational LP about motivation but he rose from a college graduate to a vice president and general sales manager of one of the nation's outstanding real estate companies in a short amount of time. That's what the liner notes say including the part where the real estate company is outstanding.

Not only did Bob Conklin accomplish that. He also built a sales force he directed (125 full time salesmen, six branch offices, six sales managers and somehow found the time to become a teacher in the Minneapolis Public School Education program. Wait, there's more. He is or was a nationally known speaker giving around 50 presentations a year. He was named the 1959 "Man of the Year" given each year by Minneapolis Sales Executives to the man making the greatest contribution to convincing people in Minneapolis and the surrounding area to consume stuff they likely won't need. To impress all of you even more, Bob Conklin was Member of the Board of Directors of the Minneapolis Board of Realtors and President of the Minneapolis Sales Executives.

Bob was a busy man and I have not even gotten to the part where Bob spends his spare time studying motivation of businessmen, thinking about motivation, and developing The Key to Motivation that is based on his research.

Now to quote the rest of the liner notes:

MOTIVATION - day-to-day - drive . . . energy . . . enthusiasm . . , CAN BE DEVELOPED!

... as you will realize when you open the door on this vast new insight of life and work - "The Key to Motivation!"

Hold it there. Before we get any further, I now have found another E in my E's that are the key to life success that I developed in the Neil Brahe post: energy. So it is now the three Es to life success: enthusiasm, energy and excellence.

Here is a dramatic new perspective of YOU . . . and a refreshingly different design for the foundation of your personal growth and improvement . . .

Here is a creative program conceived for the millions and millions of people who are dedicating their lives to service . . . and purpose . . . and loved ones . . .

For these people . . . the understanding and application of these principles of motivation will mean . . .

New vitality . . . energy . . . productive power.
Elimination of negative thinking . . . boredom . . . retarding forces . . . frustration . . . futility.
An insulation against the devastating effects of criticism, complaints, envy.
A new pleasantness, new feelings of satisfaction, progress, achievement.
A discovery of new YOU . . . meant to live a purposeful, exhilarating life.

Neil Brahe - The Magic Power of Enthusiasm in Dental Practice

Neil Brahe - The Magic Power of Enthusiasm in Dental Practice

* special thanks to yragentman for providing this LP

This LP should be mandatory listening for all dentists and anyone else in the dental/oral hygiene profession. The American Dental Association (ADA) should be promoting this. (If you live outside of the USA, you'll have to look up your country's dental association and tell them about this record.) The last few times I went to the dentist, there was not any enthusiasm projected by the dentist or any of the staff. My dental appointments were dreadful experiences. It does not help that I have a fear of dentists just as some people have a fear of spiders and clowns. If dentists and their assistants displayed more enthusiasm, the experience at the dentist would be more bearable.

Somewhat surprisingly, there is no information about this record or about Neil Brahe. The record does not include any liner notes. It is known that Neil Brahe is or was a dentist. There are so many questions that need answering. What is Neil Brahe's background? Why did he decide to become a dentist? How did he develop enthusiasm? What is Neil's favorite movie? Is he still alive? I searched his name in the world's most famous search engine and none of the sites retrieved offer any background information on Neil Brahe. However, there are some profiles of dentists retreieved who are members of the Neil Brahe Study Club. What is the story behind the Neil Brahe Study Club? What is the Neil Brahe Study Club? Just when you think there are answers found, more questions are found instead.

After listening to this LP, I suddenly felt more enthusiastic. No doubt you will too after listening. In fact, I should strive to have more enthusiasm every day. If I demand enthusiasm from people doing some sort of procedures in my mouth, it is only fair that I should be enthusiastic myself. Come to think of it, everybody in all walks of life should be more enthusiastic. Enthusiasm is a major ingredient that leads to excellence. Yes, I have found the two Es that are the key to success in life: enthusiasm and excellence. For instance, this blog is a result of the two Es. I'm sure there are more Es, and I'll write them down when I find them. You do not have to be in dental practice to listen to this LP as the magic power of enthusiasm is there to be given to you. Will you accept this gift or are you going to be a sad lonely pathetic soul the rest of your life?*

Howard Loy - How to Stop Smoking Without Using Willpower

Howard Loy - How to Stop Smoking Without Using Willpower

Here's another quit-smoking record. What makes this one different from the others is that you don't have to use willpower to quit smoking. That's what the title says. I'm sure that this is the one that will work this time and no more money will be put in the pockets of tobacco companies. Smoking is not a physical addiction, it is a learned habit that can be unlearned, the liner notes assert. (Right.) The techniques, lessons and exercises have been created by some guy named Howard Loy. This LP includes a couple of celebrity endorsements by Joanne Woodward and Richard Basehart. They also appear on the LP's introduction. About the celebrities, I know Joanne Woodward is Paul Newman's wife and I never heard of Richard Basehart until I bought this LP at one of the Salvation Army thrift stores. Since I started school and a new job (yes, I finally am no longer a lazy food-stamp-carrying bum sucking up welfare from the guvment, perhaps now I will become a successful person using the lessons I learned from my collection of Success Motivation Institute records), I no longer have much free time. I did not get to look up more info on Richard Basehart.

About Howard Loy from the liner notes:

Howard Loy is one of the pioneers in the technique of subconscious teaching.

He first became interested in the application of this technique while on the supervisory staff of NAOP - Narcotic Addict Out-patient Program for the State of California.

The techniques he developed over months of research have been employed by over 3,000 people with success recorded in 87% of the cases.

Among those who have taken the course are many of Hollywood's leading personalities.
(Maybe there's a few even I've heard of.)

Mr. Loy earned his BA degree and his Master's degree in psychology at Pepperdine College. He is a family counselor, a child counselor and a member of the psychology staff at Glendale College in Southern California.

An important piece of advice from the liner notes for those serious about quitting smoking: How to Stop Smoking Without Using Willpower consists of a program of four lessons and two exercises. They are planned and scheduled in the manner best suited to helping you reprogram the data in your subconscious. Follow the schedule as indicated here. Do not skip ahead. It will only end up confusing you. Richard Basehart Comment Introduction: Howard Loy Joanne Woodward Comment

SECOND DAY: Exercise #1

THIRD DAY: Lesson #2, Exercise #1

FOURTH DAY: Exercise #1

FIFTH DAY: Exercise #1

Art Holst - The Challenge of a Pro

Art Holst - The Challenge of a Pro

LP released in 1969

This is a recording of motivational speaker Art Holst in front of a gathering of sales professionals at a sales conference in Chicago. Art, of course, is trying to encourage and motivate his audience to strive to seek opportunities and meet their goals of selling lots of stuff and making lots of money from sales of lots of stuff . Art uses humorous anecdotes especially during his time as an official in the National Football League, the highest level of tackle football in America. Art is self-deprecating which helps since his job as an official is the most disliked and least respected profession in professional sports despite their job to keep the game in order. Art sure does enjoy hearing himself talk about football. He uses a few football metaphors throughout his speech (BTW, did you know that football season is almost here?).

At the midpoint of his speech, Art assures the audience that hippies or as he likes to call them "bearded, long-haired, dirty, unshaven, stinkin beatniks" won't undermine the free enterprise system and influence over 220 million Americans to change their ways. Bearded, long-haired beatniks seems to sound cooler than hippies. I prefer beatnik over hippie.

Art inspires his audience to meet the challenge of a pro by competing to be a winner because winning is what matters most in the competitive society, the society that the dirty unshaven beatniks are trying to change.
That means the listener of this recording, that is you, will be inspired to meet goals, score touchdowns (in sales that is) and be a winner.

Ernie Anderson and Alex Dreier - Miracle Methods and Power Closing Techniques

Ernie Anderson and Alex Dreier - Miracle Methods and Power Closing Techniques

Here is an LP targeted at salesmen so they can increase wealth for their companies and even for themselves. The liner notes say:

On this one LP disc, the Businessmen's Record Club presents two outstanding talks on salesmanship by two distinguished TV and radio personalities.

On Side One, Ernie Anderson offers every salesman 13 "miracle methods" to raise personal sales and income. Each of these methods sounds simple enough, even obvious to anyone with any success in selling.
[Why are they miracle methods then if they are so obvious that every salesman (salesperson) should be trained in using them?] Yet each method is ignored by countless salesmen every day, for an incalculable loss in sales revenue for the companies they represent. [So, that's why they are called "miracle methods". Would it be a miracle if many salesmen didn't ignore these methods? Then there would be no need for this LP and Ernie Anderson wouldn't make any money telling people "miracle methods". Oh, sorry, I accidentally used a bit of what is called critical thinking.]

The important thing is to put each of these miracle methods into practice. For they are all based on action, not some abstract theory.
[These can be used in the real world. Great!] They all require more effort, but all pay off with handsome rewards. [That means get off your lazy asses and get out there and get in customers' faces to peddle your wares.] And - taken altogether - these 13 methods will take you up the mountain top [Mt. McKinley?, the Matterhorn?, K2?], reaching for the stars. You'll be a happier, more successful, more popular person when you make each method an everyday habit for the rest of your life. [This sentence alone should be an incentive to head for the dl link.]

On Side Two, Alex Dreier offers nine power closing techniques to help you achieve the most important step in selling
[Side Two starts by Alex saying "Now we come to the payoff". Was this sampled on an Ice Cube record or was it another rapper? I recall hearing this snippet on some rap record way back when.] . . . getting that signature on the dotted line. [Does this also make you happier, more successful and more popular not to mention better looking?] Everything else in selling may be important - but the man who finally makes the sale is the man who brings home the bacon. [And the eggs, and the bread, and the milk.]

A good closer reaps the benefit of everything which has gone before him . . . the advertising, the customer's natural desire, even his competitor's spadework.
[Does this mean that Ernie Anderson's miracle methods are no good unless a salesman can close the deal? Good thing that 9 power closing techniques are on the other side of the LP. Then again, Businessmen's Record Club could have charged more money by putting Alex Dreier's 9 power closing techniques on a separate LP. Then again, the underachieving salesmen most likely could not afford 2 LPs., so they should be thankful for the 2-on-1 LP.]

Mr. Dreier first proves that an initial "No" from the buyer means nothing, that most sales are made after the buyer says "No."
[No way!] Then he goes on to describe nine effective ways of changing that "No" to a "Yes!" [I'll mention that when I say "no", I mean "no". None of these techniques will convince me to change my mind, but that does not mean that it cannot work on someone else. Some people enjoy making salesmen earn their sales according to Mr. Dreier.]

Every salesman should find at least several of these closing techniques to fit his own particular style, his own product or service - and to suit nearly every situation he may encounter. Careful attention to any or all nine closes will, with practice, improve your sales record - with a corresponding raise in income.
[which translates to more happiness, more success, more popularity, more opportunities to get laid]

So, there you have it. You don't have to end up like Willy Loman. Miracle methods and power closing techniques will have you rolling in the dough and turn you into a legend in generating revenue for businesses.
